THE WITNESS WORE RED ~ by Rebecca Musser with M. Bridget Cook

The Witness Wore Red was the first book of a two week reading binge about the Fundamentalist Latter Day Saints based in Hildale, UT. After coming across an old Dr. Phil episode with Rebecca Musser, I got curious and dove in.

There are inconsistencies in this book. For example, Ms. Musser spends a time describing the physical abuse and alienation growing up in her father’s house, describes how even the prophet of the church did little to nothing about it, how that sort of thing was far from unique. Later, it is stated that abuse was not tolerated in the church until Warren Jeffs became prophet. It is a good example of how the indoctrination is so deep in this sect, the lies are always going to seep out and overlap truth.

There are truly times when Rebecca Musser strives to protect certain members. She was the forced 19th wife of prophet Rulon Jeffs, unhappy, abused and ultimately had to escape, yet she glides over culpability of some. That crazy indoctrination thing again.

It should be noted, Rebecca Musser helped take down the veil covering Warren Jeffs and his despicable acts. She also played a big part in helping law enforcement understand the FLDS so as not to perpetuate a Waco style stand-off. If it takes her 20 years to a lifetime to heal from her indoctrination, I’m still good with that.
